Did you know that we have an extensive collection of local history books at the AFHS Resource Centre (Suite 251S, 8500 Macleod Tr SE in Calgary)? This month we are featuring The Days Before Yesterday: History of Rocky Mountain District. Published in 1977, it has 709 pages and can be found in our collection at call number 971.23 ROCK 1977. Here's an excerpt from page 7: “Lying between the plains and the mountains is a beautiful part of Alberta variously called Parkland, Foothills or Transition Zone. Many early settlers tried to transplant their implements, seed crops and way of life here from Eastern Canada, USA or Europe, without much success. Some gave up and went back to their old homes and comfortable ways. Those who stayed learned about soil, climate, new hybrid varieties of grains, forage and vegetables, even fruit and prospered.
