Visit Our Waterfront Festival Saturday! For the first time since the pandemic touched down on Canada's West Coast, the Crescent Beach Life Guarding Corporation (CBLG) is welcoming everyone to its rebooted annual Waterfront Festival from 10am - 2pm on Saturday, Aug. 19, at the entrance to Blackie Spit (Wickson Road and McBride Avenue) in Crescent Beach, Surrey. Lifeguards and other first responders - including the Surrey Fire Service, the Surrey Police Service, BC Ambulance, volunteers from the nearby Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue Station as well as other search and rescue members will be on site to chat with the public about their work keeping people safe. The lifeguards host the annual event to showcase the beautiful beach and educate people about how to enjoy it safely. "We love seeing young people having a good time around the water making memories with their families - and what we really like to see is them doing that responsibly," Head Lifeguard Logan Watson said. The non-for-profit CBLG has been providing contract waterfront lifeguarding to the City of Surrey since the summer of 1997. The lifeguards are responsible for two swimming areas – one north of Sullivan Point with a sailing dock and one south that reveals sand bars at low tide. Each summer, they routinely save numerous swimmers from drowning, the third leading cause of unintentional deaths in Canada. This year, Assistant Head Guard Emma Baecker was awarded a Silver Medal for Bravery by the Lifesaving Society of BC & Yukon for rescuing a man last summer when she saw him at night - after the lifeguards had ended their shift.
