The Unitarian Congregation in Mississauga is a Canadian nonprofit religious organization affiliated with the Unitarian Universalist tradition. It was founded in the mid-20th century as part of a broader movement to serve the spiritual needs of communities west of Toronto.
History
The congregation traces its origins to a split from the First Unitarian Congregation of Toronto in 1953, driven by rapid growth and the need to accommodate parishioners in the western suburbs. The new congregation initially met in public spaces such as Dixie Road Public School starting January 24, 1954, with Rev. William P. Jenkins as an early minister guiding its development. The community quickly evolved from a Sunday school to include weekly services for adults as well as children. By 1956, the congregation was formally established and began developing its own permanent home[2][3].
Facilities and Environmental Commitment
In 1954, the congregation constructed its original church building on a former farm site near the intersection of Hurontario Street and the Queen Elizabeth Way (QEW). Over time, the congregation sought to enhance its site and facilities guided by principles rooted in Unitarian Universalist values. A feasibility study was undertaken that included visits to environmental centers and other congregations to inform their plans.
Their architectural approach incorporated the seven Unitarian Principles, emphasizing respect for the interdependent web of life through environmentally responsible design. The resulting building features passive solar heating via large south-facing windows, natural ventilation, energy-efficient systems, and durable materials. It was assessed to be approximately 36% more energy efficient than the Model National Energy Code for Buildings and received federal support from the Commercial Buildings Incentive Program. The project included new church hall and landscaping improvements to create a welcoming and sustainable congregational space[1].
Affiliation and Community Role
The Unitarian Congregation in Mississauga (formerly known as the Unitarian Congregation of South Peel) is part of the wider Canadian Unitarian Council network, which serves as the national organization for Unitarian, Universalist, and Unitarian Universalist congregations across Canada. The congregation is a member of various inclusivity initiatives, including certification as a Welcoming Congregation, affirming its commitment to equity and inclusion within the community[4][5].
Mission and Activities
The congregation is dedicated to nurturing spiritual growth, fostering community, and promoting social justice, consistent with Unitarian Universalist values. It offers regular Sunday services and various programs aimed at deepening spirit and supporting action for a better world[3].
