Sunshine Coast Conservation Association
The Sunshine Coast Conservation Association (SCCA) is a charitable non-profit organization dedicated to protecting the biodiversity and ecosystem integrity of the Sunshine Coast region in British Columbia, Canada. It operates in the territories of the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh, shíshálh, Tla'amin, Klahoose, and Homalco First Nations, encompassing over two million hectares of coastal temperate rainforest.
Mission and Goals
The SCCA's mission is to preserve the natural biodiversity of the Sunshine Coast for the benefit of present and future generations. This is achieved through a variety of activities, including research, educational outreach, alliance building, and advocacy. The association aims to conserve and restore biodiversity throughout the Sunshine Coast Natural Resource District, from Howe Sound to Bute Inlet, by protecting watersheds, ecosystems, and species[1][5].
Activities and Outreach
The SCCA works collaboratively with numerous local conservation and community groups, First Nations, government entities, civic organizations, industry, academia, and the general public. It engages in transformative conservation campaigns and holds decision-makers accountable for environmental policies and practices[1][5]. The organization also supports community members and partners by empowering them to contribute to conservation efforts through volunteer work and educational programs.
Structure
The SCCA is a volunteer-based association that represents over thirty local groups. Despite being volunteer-driven, it has a small paid team responsible for carrying out its objectives, supported by dozens of volunteers[1][4]. Established in 1996, it operates as a member-based association and is registered as a charity with the Canada Revenue Agency, allowing it to issue tax receipts for donations[5].
Public Engagement
The SCCA encourages public participation in various community events and initiatives, such as workshops for planning local infrastructure and environmental restoration projects. For example, it participates in events like native plant planting and invasive species removal to restore critical habitats, such as salmon habitats in estuaries[1]. The organization also provides educational resources and engages with the community through platforms like their YouTube channel and social media profiles[2][3].

Happy World Rivers Day and BC Rivers Day! From the glacial headwaters to the estuaries where salmon meet the sea, rivers are the lifelines of the Sunshine Coast. They feed our forests, nurture salmon runs, recharge groundwater, and sustain the wildlife and communities that depend on them. Today we celebrate the Chapman, Dakota, Gray, Wilson, and all the creeks and streams that weave through our region. But celebration goes hand-in-hand with stewardship: these waters face pressures from drought, development, and climate-driven low-flows. 💙 This World Rivers Day, let’s recommit to: 🌱 protecting healthy riparian zones 🐟 restoring salmon habitat 🚰 using water wisely 🤝 speaking up for strong watershed protections 📸 Share your favourite local river moment and tag us; let’s flood the feed with #BCRiversDay love for the waters that connect us all. #WorldRiversDay #BCRiversDay #SunshineCoastBC #WatershedProtection #SCCAStewardship #ProtectOurRivers #SalmonStrong (fb)
