Can you count all the salmon? AI can 🎥🐟 New technology is transforming how we monitor fish populations in hard-to-reach places. With support from PSF, the Wild Salmon Center is working with First Nations partners to pilot AI-powered salmon counting systems at 10 monitoring sites across B.C. and Alaska. These systems combine video and sonar cameras with computer-vision models to automatically detect and identify salmon as they migrate upstream. Field crews have already captured tens of thousands of salmon clips this season, and the project aims to generate accurate return estimates by late fall. This data gives insight into the status of salmon populations, informs salmon management, and supports real-time harvest planning for First Nations across the Pacific Northwest. (fb)
