Police Athletic League (PAL)
The Police Athletic League (PAL) operates as a Canadian nonprofit organization (Business Registration Number: 824766745RR0001) under the umbrella of local law enforcement agencies, focusing on youth crime prevention through athletic, recreational, and educational programs. While PAL chapters exist internationally, the Vancouver Police Department (VPD) oversees one such initiative, designed to build trust and rapport between officers and youth through structured activities[2][4].
Mission and Activities
PAL programs emphasize positive engagement between law enforcement and young participants, offering sports leagues, academic support, and mentorship opportunities. Activities in Vancouver include basketball tournaments, soccer camps, rugby clinics, and running clubs, often organized in partnership with schools and community groups[2]. The VPD Basketball Association, a long-standing PAL-affiliated program, hosts events such as lunch-hour games at elementary schools, wheelchair basketball tournaments, and annual scholarship-awarding competitions for high school athletes[2].
Program Structure
PAL initiatives prioritize relationship-building through activities like Share-a-Meal, which pairs officers with at-risk youth in informal settings, and Turning Point, an anti-gang education program addressing vulnerabilities to organized crime[2]. These efforts aim to reduce juvenile delinquency by fostering mutual respect and providing alternatives to high-risk behaviors[1][4].
Impact
By integrating law enforcement into youth development, PAL seeks to strengthen community-police relations while promoting teamwork, academic achievement, and leadership skills. The model aligns with the broader mission of international PAL organizations, emphasizing crime prevention through mentorship and accessible programming[3][4].

Thank you to everyone who came out and helped make this year’s Celebration of Light a safe and successful event! We’re especially grateful to the thousands of spectators who were patient with crowds, road closures, and delays as everyone made their way in and out of the area. A big thank-you as well to all the dedicated people working behind the scenes and on the ground — including our #VPD officers, civilian staff, volunteers, and partner agencies like Vancouver Fire Rescue Services, BC EHS, Metro Vancouver Transit Police, City of Vancouver, E-Comm 911, and many others. Your teamwork and commitment helped ensure three great nights for our community. #CelebOfLight (fb)
Congratulations to #VPD Sergeant Dayne Campbell, who has been awarded the King Charles III Coronation Medal in recognition of his remarkable volunteer service with Cops for Cancer. For more than 17 years, Sgt. Campbell rode with the Cops for Cancer team, dedicating himself to raising funds and awareness for pediatric cancer research. Last year, his commitment became deeply personal when his daughter was diagnosed with cancer — a moment that inspired him to cycle 7,000 km across Canada in her honour. Over the years, Dayne’s efforts — both as a team member and individually — have helped raise more than $8 million to support life-saving research and treatment, and to give children with cancer the chance to attend Camp Goodtimes, a place of joy, connection, and healing. Fittingly, Dayne chose to receive his medal at Camp Goodtimes last week — a place that reflects the heart of his mission.
