To mark National Tree Day, we’re highlighting one of the iconic native species in the Lake Simcoe Watershed: the American beech (Fagus grandifolia). How to Identify It: 🍃Smooth, gray bark that stays unbroken even as the tree ages 🍃”Elephant feet” roots, flared bases that resemble the thick legs of an elephant 🍃Oval leaves that turn a brilliant gold in fall and often cling to branches through winter. 🍃Spiky seed husks in autumn containing small, triangular beech nuts, a favourite for wildlife. You’ll find American beeches in shady, mature forests around the Lake Simcoe Watershed. Their quiet beauty and ecological value make them a fitting tree to celebrate today!
