You must allow us to tell you how ardently we admire and love the Regency era, particularly the gorgeous attire. 😍 With the opening of this season's Sense and Sensibility, we take a look back at other productions from our past that were set in this romantic period. 🎩 1961's Coriolanus was set during the Napoleonic Wars, making it our first production to feature regency-era costuming. 🎩 Our first regency romance couple was in 1968, when Romeo and Juliet was staged in the era. Christopher Walken played Romeo opposite Louise Marleau as Juliet. 🎩 Did you know that Sense and Sensibility is only the second Jane Austen adaptation to be played at the Festival? Christine Baranski opened up about how the Stratford Festival plays a starring role in her career-origin story: “I think I’m an actress because when I was in high school, we took a train up to the Stratford Festival and I was just hit with an arrow in the heart when I saw a production of Romeo and Juliet,” says Baranski, adding that she kept returning to the renowned southwestern Ontario theatre fest over the years and even got to watch the late, great Dame Maggie Smith perform.
