Down Syndrome Resource Foundation (DSRF)
The Down Syndrome Resource Foundation is a Canadian nonprofit organisation dedicated to supporting individuals with Down syndrome and their families. Located on the unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples, specifically the hən̓ q̓əmin̓ əm and the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh speaking peoples, DSRF aims to provide a safe and inclusive environment for its community.
Mission and Vision
The mission of DSRF is to support people living with Down syndrome and their families through individualized and leading-edge educational programs, health services, information resources, and rich social connections. This mission helps individuals flourish in their own right. The foundation's vision is to create a Canada that values and empowers people with Down syndrome, fostering economic, social, and individual inclusion throughout their lives.
Programs and Services
DSRF offers a range of educational and recreational group programs for both youth and adults with Down syndrome. Additionally, it provides one-to-one educational and health services tailored for individuals and families at all stages of life. The foundation also delivers relevant resources to equip parents, caregivers, and professionals in supporting those with Down syndrome.
Social Responsibility
DSRF is committed to the principles of truth and reconciliation. It acknowledges the historical underservicing of Indigenous people with Down syndrome and is working to address this inequity. In 2022, DSRF undertook a rebranding effort to ensure sensitivity and respect towards important Indigenous causes, such as the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls movement.
Community Impact
A significant portion of DSRF families report receiving support from the foundation that they cannot find elsewhere, highlighting its impact on the community. This support includes educational programs, health services, and social connections that are crucial for fostering a supportive environment for individuals with Down syndrome.
Events and Publications
The foundation organizes various events, such as the annual Down Syndrome Film Festival, which showcases films created by and starring members of the Down syndrome community. Additionally, DSRF publishes a magazine titled "3.21," which covers topics relevant to its mission and community.
Financial Support
DSRF has received significant donations from organizations like the Canucks for Kids Fund, illustrating the broader community's commitment to its cause.
