Did You Know? Hubert Smith, of the Wild Rose area, enlisted with the 1st Pioneer Battalion in Prince Albert on December 1915 at the age of 24. On August 8, 1916, during the battle of Ypres, Sgt. Hubert S. Smith was the target of a German sniper. The snipers bullet would have pierced Hubert’s heart if the small cardboard pocket book and his wedding picture, kept in his left breast pocket, hadn’t deflected the bullet to a non-fatal position just below the heart. The bullet was not removed at that time. After returning from the war, Sgt. Smith and his wife operated a farm in the Wild Rose area for 16 years before the bullet started to move and cause some problems. On the eighteenth anniversary of the declaration of war, July 12th 1932, the corroded metal slug was surgically removed from Sgt. Smith’s chest. The bullet that struck Sgt. Hubert S. Smith, the pocket book and the pictures that saved his life are on display at the Historical Museum. So come on down and see Mr. Hubert Smith’s amazing story and many other great historical artefacts! (fb)
