On this National Indigenous Peoples Day, and all days, we encourage everyone to reflect and think about recognizing and celebrating the cultures and contributions of all First Nations, Metis, and Indigenous peoples of Canada, and, in particular, thinking about who's territory you are on today; celebrating those who came before who are continuing to stand strong in their healing journeys as they learn to celebrate their own cultures in the face of the continued challenges faced by Colonialism every day. The heron reserve is located on the shared Tribal territory of the Soowahlie people, who are part of the Ts'elxewyeqw Tribe, and the Semá:th Tribe who are all Stó:lo, and we acknowledge that much of our work has been done from a Colonial perspective. We are actively seeking to change this as we prioritize the incorporation of Indigenous (Stó:lō) Worldview, Voices, and Knowledge into the Reserve teachings and practices. Our overall goal is to offer the Reserve as a venue to empower Indigenous knowledge keepers to share their chosen messages with the community at large. This includes dedicating space to honouring and sharing the Halq’emeylem language, telling historical truths, and emboldening strong connections with the Earth and one another as we focus on active Reconciliation, healing the wounds of Colonialism and addressing the climate crisis.
