BrainTrust Canada Association

Overview BrainTrust Canada Association is a registered Canadian non-profit organization dedicated to supporting individuals affected by acquired brain injury (ABI), including traumatic and non-traumatic brain injuries. The organization was founded in 1986 by a group that included individuals with brain injuries, their families, care home owners, an occupational therapist, and a personal injury lawyer. Initially, the group aimed to create support groups and find supportive housing options for those living with brain injuries.

History and Evolution

Over the years, the organization has evolved through several name changes, from North & South Okanagan Head Injury Society to Central Okanagan Brain Injury Society, before becoming BrainTrust Canada Association. One of its founding directors, Paul Mitchell, a personal injury lawyer, has been instrumental in advocating for brain injury causes for over 25 years.

Mission

BrainTrust Canada operates with a clear mission to raise awareness about brain injury, reduce preventable injuries, and provide evidence-based programs and educational resources. Their goal is to maximize the potential of individuals affected by brain injuries, offering a range of services tailored to meet unique recovery needs.

Services and Programs

  • Life Skills Support: Programs designed to enhance daily living skills for individuals recovering from brain injuries.
  • Youth Services: Specialized programs for younger individuals dealing with brain injuries, focusing on education and development.
  • Education and Awareness: Educational resources include recovery guides, webinars, and research materials available through their resource center.

Impact

Given that approximately 1.5 million Canadians live with a brain injury, BrainTrust Canada plays a critical role in addressing this 'silent epidemic.' The organization highlights alarming statistics, such as the likelihood of developing depression or facing incarceration being significantly higher among individuals with brain injuries.

Role in the Community

BrainTrust Canada collaborates with the community to provide innovative approaches to rehabilitation and recovery. It remains committed to bringing the issue of brain injury to the forefront, ensuring that those affected receive the support they need to achieve meaningful outcomes in their lives.
