Displacement shouldn’t limit children’s rights or their futures. However, many schools in refugee settlements are overcrowded and under-resourced, and teachers often lack formal training. Deo, a project officer in Kibondo, shares how Right To Play is helping teachers strengthen their skills in play-based learning, creating safe, nurturing, and inclusive environments that engage large classes in active learning. On #WorldRefugeeDay, we stand in solidarity with refugees and honor the resilience of displaced children in overcoming extraordinary hardships to rebuild their lives. Burundi is home to over 300,000 displaced individuals, including many youth who are returnees after being forced to flee. These young people often face the profound challenges of loss, displacement, and isolation, struggling to connect in their host communities. But sport has an incredible power to bring people together. Thanks to the support of the Olympic Refuge Foundation, our Kukivi – Sport Protects project is empowering these youth to overcome trauma, build connections with each other, and begin their journey toward healing and hope.
