Habitat for Humanity Vancouver Island North Society
Habitat for Humanity Vancouver Island North Society is a Canadian nonprofit organization dedicated to building affordable housing for families in need on Northern Vancouver Island, British Columbia. Established in 2004, the organization operates with charitable status under the Canadian Revenue Agency, holding the business registration number 865088140RR0001.
Mission and Vision
The society’s mission is to build strength, stability, and self-reliance through affordable homeownership opportunities for local families. Habitat for Humanity Vancouver Island North envisions a world where everyone has a safe and decent place to live, emphasizing housing as a basic human right.
Core Values
- Housing for All: Access to safe, decent, and affordable housing is a fundamental human right.
- Human Dignity: Respect and recognition of the worth and dignity of every individual.
- Partnership: Achievement of their mission through meaningful and mutually beneficial partnerships.
- Diversity and Inclusiveness: Responsiveness to the diverse needs of the community.
- Volunteerism: Reliance on the positive spirit and contributions of volunteers.
Programs and Operations
The organization partners with local families who need housing, helping them purchase affordable homes by requiring homeowner applicants to volunteer a minimum of 500 hours and pay an income-geared mortgage. This mortgage model creates a revolving fund that supports the construction of additional homes, allowing the organization to continually serve more families.
Since its inception, Habitat Vancouver Island North has built 51 affordable homes for 57 families, as some homeowners have sold their homes back to the organization after achieving improved financial stability.
Facilities and Outreach
Habitat for Humanity Vancouver Island North operates several ReStores in Courtenay and Campbell River, which help raise funds and divert materials from landfill by reselling donated building materials and household items. The proceeds support the construction of homes and community programs.
Community Impact
The society’s model bridges the gap for low-income working families by offering a realistic pathway to homeownership. This approach not only provides shelter but fosters stronger, healthier lives by enabling families to build a secure foundation for their futures.

On April 22nd, at 1375 Piercy Avenue in Courtenay, we celebrated Jessica and her son Keiran receiving the key to their new home! Brennan Day MLA for Courtenay-Comox, Mayor Bob Wells and Reverend Ingrid Brown from the Weird Church Cumberland, all shared kind words with the new homeowners. Students from Queneesh Elementary School read their touching 'Meaning of Home' entries. Their class supports Habitat in countless ways, including volunteering at the Habitat for Humanity VIN ReStore Comox Valley. You all are shining stars! A huge thank you to Coastal Community Credit Union, which is a major supporter of all our projects. Erika Nessman, Area Manager at CCCU, presented Jessica with symbolic gifts at the ceremony, including a toolbox donated by Midland Tools. Thank you to all our partners, volunteers and generous community members! Your time and donations make our mission at Habitat possible. 👉 Read the full story and see all the beautiful photos from this special day on our website: https://vin.habitat.ca/en/news/habitat-welcomes-home-family-in-courtenay Thank you, Veronica Willis Photography, for capturing many of these special moments.
