"Moonshine" was our first moose this year. She was found outside of Terrace on a FSR. Her rescuers got in touch with NLWS when the saw her alone on the side of the road. After observing her for a long time, we all felt confident that she had somehow lost her mom and help was needed. She had a difficult time with several infections, one of which settled in her knee joint and we often felt she might not make it. However she wasn't giving up, so neither did we. Thanks to the steadfast assistance from or vet team and the excellent care by her caregivers, she persevered and we are hopeful that we can release her next year. Remember "Whiskey"? The tiny 3lb cub was wandering around a lake shore on April 24th, near Birken BC. A astute citizen realized that this cub needed help and scooped him up and contacted NLWS. Board member and capture volunteer Lydia Koot set out for pick up right away and arranged safe transport for the cub to Smithers. Arriving at the shelter the first exam showed some infected puncture wounds and malnutrition. With appropriate treatment of his wounds and careful feeding Whiskey's playful nature soon emerged. He also grew and gained weight, tipping the scale to 64.4lb on August 17th, almost 20x his arrival weight in in only 4 short month. He is well prepared for hibernation and is expected to go to sleep by November with his friends.
