Richmond Music School Society

The Richmond Music School Society (RMS) is the largest and oldest not-for-profit music school in Richmond, British Columbia, Canada. Founded in 1979 and officially registered as a charity in 1980, RMS is dedicated to providing high-quality music education through both private and group lessons to students of all ages and skill levels. It maintains a strong commitment to high teaching standards while ensuring affordability and accessibility for the wider community.

History and Mission

Established as a cornerstone of community music education in Richmond, RMS serves as a founding member of the British Columbia Association of Community Music Schools. The organization focuses on fostering musical development and appreciation throughout Metro Vancouver by offering diverse programs that cater to beginners and advanced students alike. RMS’s objective is to make music education accessible to everyone, regardless of background or financial means, through outreach initiatives and affordable fees.

Programs and Offerings

RMS provides an extensive array of music programs for children, youth, and adults, including:

• Introductory lessons for young children, such as the RMS Violin for Kinders program and Tiny Tots Piano Program for ages 2 to 5.
• Low-cost beginner piano and violin lessons.
• Music therapy conducted by credentialed professionals.
• Chamber ensembles, junior jazz band, and musical theatre programs based on the ABRSM syllabus.
• Violin outreach programs and group classes that encourage ensemble performance.

The school also hosts student recitals, award competitions, concerto concerts featuring student soloists, masterclasses, and mock examinations. RMS acts as the official Canadian representative for the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM), facilitating globally recognized music examinations and certifications for its students.

Recognition

In acknowledgement of its significant contribution to arts education, the Richmond Music School Society received the City of Richmond’s Arts Education Award in 2020. It was also a finalist for the Richmond Chamber of Commerce’s 2020 Association of the Year Award.
