Nafsika Stamoulis Hellenic Museum Limited

Overview

Nafsika Stamoulis Hellenic Museum Limited is a nonprofit organization based in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. It operates the Hellenic Museum, which is dedicated to promoting and celebrating the artistic and cultural heritage of both ancient and modern Greece.

History

The Hellenic Museum was founded in 2007 by Spiros Stamoulis, a businessman and philanthropist. The museum is housed in the iconic Former Royal Mint Building, which was built between 1869 and 1872. This historic structure is renowned for its Renaissance Revival architectural style and is a rare example of such in Australia.

The museum was established as a tribute to Spiros Stamoulis's late daughter, Nafsika Stamoulis. Spiros, who emigrated from Greece to Australia in his youth, built a successful business career, allowing him to give back to his adopted city through cultural philanthropy.

Mission and Activities

The mission of the Hellenic Museum is to celebrate, understand, and preserve the rich cultural and artistic traditions of Greece. The museum hosts a range of exhibitions, programs, and events focused on history, culture, education, visual arts, film, music, and architecture. It also provides engaging workshops and guided tours designed to bring history to life for visitors.

The museum's collections include a photographic installation by Australian photographer Bill Henson, the Mary and Peter Mitrakas Collection of Cypriot Antiquities, a collection of casts of ancient Greek statues, the Koumountatakis Family collection of pottery from Magna Grecia and Roman marbles, and a selection of Byzantine icons.

In 2013, the museum partnered with the Benaki Museum in Greece to bring a semi-permanent collection of Greek antiquities to Melbourne, starting in 2014.

Leadership

The museum's activities are currently led by Harry Stamoulis, who continues his father's vision by fostering cultural partnerships and collaborations through philanthropy in the arts.

Community Engagement

Through its programs and exhibitions, the Hellenic Museum serves as a cultural hub for the Greek community in Melbourne and Australia, while also promoting Greek culture to the broader public. It offers educational activities designed to engage people of all ages with Greek mythology, history, and art.
