Lighthouse Foundation

It’s #NationalChildrensWeek. A time to celebrate every child’s right to love, safety, and belonging. This year’s theme, “Everyone should know about Children’s Rights,” reminds us that understanding and protecting these rights is essential to every child’s wellbeing, something we see every day at Lighthouse. A 2024 report by the Australian Human Rights Commission, A Ground to Grow From, sheds light on the experiences of children and young people in out-of-home care (OOHC) across Australia. The findings are sobering: 🏠 In 2023, 45,273 children were living in OOHC. 🏠 Children aged 10–14 years made up the largest group at 32.1%. 🏠 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children were 10.8 times more likely than non-Indigenous children to be in OOHC. Across this national study, one message came through clearly: children and young people need a deep sense of belonging to family, culture, and community. At Lighthouse, this insight is woven into everything we do. We know that when young people experience constant moves, it becomes harder to form identity and connection. That’s why, at Lighthouse, time is a gift. Young people move on when they feel ready — not at an arbitrary deadline. Because of this our average length of stay is above industry norms, and when a young person transitions to independence our On for Life program ensures they continue to receive support for as long as they need. Programs like On for Life are rare in Australia’s care sector, yet they meet a critical need: helping young people build safe, lasting relationships and the skills to live independently — reducing the risk of homelessness and laying strong foundations for life.
