You may have heard discussions surrounding the Abortion Law Reform Amendment (Health Care Access) Bill 2025, which has now passed in Parliament. As a pregnancy support organisation, we are directly impacted by legislation that affects women’s health—especially when it relates to abortion access. While we offer non-judgemental, compassionate, and free support to women regardless of their choice, we firmly believe that true choice requires a range of real, accessible options. When the focus shifts heavily toward expanding abortion access—without equal investment in mental health support, practical resources, and ongoing care—women are more likely to feel pressured toward the most immediate solution, not necessarily the one that best reflects their needs and circumstances. Our experience over many years tells us that rushed decisions made in moments of crisis, without adequate support, can leave lasting emotional impacts. We believe options and support are not burdens—they are rights. This legislation expands the ability for nurse practitioners and midwives to prescribe abortion medication, potentially making the process more transactional and clinical. We are concerned this further distances women from the holistic, person-centred care they deserve. We urge the government to recognise and invest in the vital, wrap-around services pregnancy centres provide. Assuming abortion is the only response to an unplanned pregnancy narrows the narrative of womanhood and underestimates women’s resilience and capacity when truly supported.
