Australian Kookaburra Kids Foundation Limited
The Australian Kookaburra Kids Foundation Limited is a nonprofit organization in Australia dedicated to supporting children and young people aged 8-18 living in families affected by mental illness. With a focus on empowering these young individuals, the foundation aims to build resilience, promote lifelong knowledge and abilities, and help them reach their full potential[1][2].
Mission and Activities
The foundation delivers a range of programs, including mental health psycho-education and basic coping strategies. These initiatives are designed to:
- Increase mental health literacy among participants.
- Improve help-seeking willingness and behavior.
- Enhance self-help strategies for managing stress and emotional distress.
- Facilitate triage and referrals for young people experiencing significant psychological distress.
- Foster enduring peer relationships through group activities.
- Provide access to developmentally appropriate activities such as social, recreational, and physical pursuits.
- Offer ongoing support to vulnerable young people for as long as needed[5].
Impact
The organization supports over 3,000 young people across Australia, reflecting its growing reach over the years. Initially, the foundation started with a small group of children through its first "Camp Kookaburra" event and has since expanded to register more than 2,300 children in its programs[5]. The foundation's work is underpinned by research highlighting the positive outcomes of early intervention in mental health, with a reported cost-benefit ratio that underscores the effectiveness of its approach[5].
Goals and Achievements
The Australian Kookaburra Kids Foundation seeks to ensure that all children affected by family mental illness are supported, valued, and given opportunities to thrive. By focusing on early intervention and peer support, the foundation aims to contribute positively to the lives of young people impacted by familial mental health issues, helping them navigate challenges and build resilience[2][5].

This NAIDOC Week, we celebrate the history, culture, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The 2025 theme, “The Next Generation: Strength, Vision, Legacy,” invites us to reflect on the leaders of tomorrow and the strong foundations laid by those who came before them. It also marks 50 years of NAIDOC Week, a powerful milestone in honouring and amplifying First Nations voices. At Kookaburra Kids, we are committed to creating an inclusive and welcoming community for all. Through our camps and activity days, we proudly embrace diversity and promote cultural understanding, facilitating opportunities for young people to connect with and learn from Indigenous perspectives. By continuing to embed these values into everything we do, we strengthen our culture and the positive impact we have on the young people and families we support. #NAIDOC2025 #TheNextGeneration #StrengthVisionLegacy #50YearsNAIDOC #KookaburraKids #CulturalInclusion #YouthEmpowerment (fb)
There’s nothing like wide open space and time in nature to boost your wellbeing! Our young people made the most of the fresh air at Swan Valley Adventure Centre Camp in WA, laughing, leaping and challenging themselves with activities like the Possum Glider, Flying Fox, and Commando Course. To round things out everyday we held our all-important chat groups, giving young people space to talk about mental health, explore coping strategies, and connect with peers who understand. Thank you to Telethon7 Perth and Royal Perth Golf Club for funding this camp and supporting our mission to create positive mental health outcomes for young people impacted by family mental illness.
