Today we commemorate Korean Veterans’ Day. The Korean War began in June 1950, following the invasion of South Korea by North Korea. On 27 July 1953, an armistice was signed to end the fighting. The origins of the conflict can be traced back to the end of World War II, when the Soviet Union took control of the north of the country, and the United States assumed control of the south. The Korean War never gained the profile of other conflicts, and sadly became known as the 'forgotten war'. Almost 18,000 Australians served in Korea, but they returned home to little fanfare.
