WORLD TEACHERS DAY 🍎 Today we celebrate the many wonderful teachers and staff that make Hillbrook the school that it is. While this day traditionally recognises teachers, we believe it should be an opportunity to acknowledge the collective effort of all our staff. From our dedicated teaching teams to our support staff, administration, tuck shop, finance, grounds and facilities crews - every person plays a vital role in shaping the Hillbrook community. YEAR 11 BIOLOGY 🔬 Our Year 11 Biology students recently conducted an experiment on the effectiveness of various antimicrobials on bacterial growth. Using the disk diffusion method, students inoculated agar plates with E. coli and Staphylococcus bacteria, then applied sterile filter paper disks soaked in different antimicrobial agents - including eucalyptus oil, Dettol, and other disinfectants. After allowing the plates to incubate for 24 hours, students returned to observe and measure the zones of inhibition. This experiment not only reinforced key concepts in microbiology and antibiotic resistance, but also encouraged critical thinking and scientific inquiry. Students were able to compare the effectiveness of natural versus synthetic antimicrobials and reflect on the implications for public health and medicine. (fb)
