Burnett Mary Regional Group For Natural Resource Management Ltd
The Burnett Mary Regional Group For Natural Resource Management Ltd (BMRG) is a not-for-profit organisation based in Australia dedicated to natural resource management within the Burnett Mary region. Established in 2001, BMRG serves as the peak regional body for natural resource management (NRM) in its area, linking community interests with government and other funding sources to support sustainable environmental initiatives[2][5].
Purpose and Vision
BMRG’s core purpose is to protect and enhance the agricultural and natural environment of the Burnett Mary region for future generations. Its vision focuses on fostering ecological diversity, sustainable land and water management, respect for cultural heritage, and coastal and marine conservation. The organisation directs investment into community-based programs designed to deliver positive environmental outcomes in these areas[1][2][4].
Activities and Programs
BMRG implements a variety of programs to engage the community in natural resource management activities. These include ecosystem management, water quality improvement, and sustainable agricultural practices. The organisation works collaboratively with local landcare and catchment care groups, indigenous organisations, agricultural and industrial sectors, as well as universities and schools to promote environmental stewardship[3][4].
Community and Partnerships
Community collaboration and partnerships are central to BMRG’s approach. It fosters strong relationships with local, state, and federal governments, indigenous groups, industry bodies, and conservation groups. The organisation places particular emphasis on working with Traditional Owner groups to incorporate Indigenous knowledge and cultural values into environmental projects. This partnership enhances understanding of the deep connections between people and the land and supports reconciliation efforts[2].
Governance and Structure
As one of the 54 national regional NRM bodies, BMRG operates as a company limited by guarantee. Its governance structure supports transparency and accountability in managing natural resource projects and funding on behalf of the community and government stakeholders[2][5].
The Burnett Mary Regional Group continues to play a crucial role in advancing sustainable environmental management in its region through community-led initiatives and strong collaborative networks, ensuring the protection of its natural resource base for future generations.

Can you help uncover a lost legend? 🕵️♀️ Today on Endangered Species Day, we shine a light on one of Australia’s greatest mysteries — the Coxen’s Fig-Parrot. This tiny green ghost — the smallest of Australia’s parrots — hasn’t been officially seen in decades. Believed to be critically endangered, or possibly extinct, it once fluttered through the Burnett Mary region, from near Bundaberg down to Byron Bay. Have you seen it? Heard it? You might be the one who helps rediscover a long-lost treasure. 💚 (fb)
The Burnett Mary Regional Group (BMRG) is proud to welcome Alex Desormeaux to our Riverine Restoration team in the role of Junior Support Officer. Alex brings with him a strong foundation in conservation fieldwork and environmental stewardship, built through hands-on roles with the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA) and York University. His professional journey includes ecosystem management, constructing and maintaining restoration infrastructure, and leading community volunteer events such as tree planting and watershed clean-ups. He’s also skilled in GIS mapping of road mortality and turtle nests, wildlife handling for population studies, and species identification. With a Bachelor of Arts in Sustainability and Society from Dalhousie University, Alex offers a well-rounded mix of academic knowledge and practical field experience that aligns seamlessly with BMRG’s mission. In his role at BMRG, Alex supports the monitoring and evaluation of streambank remediation projects across the region. Through regular site inspections, he assesses the impact of interventions like fencing, revegetation, and bank stabilisation in reducing fine sediment runoff to the Great Barrier Reef. He also contributes to the co-design, data collection, management, and reporting for both new and existing project sites, and assists with policy development and a range of fieldwork activities. Away from work, Alex enjoys spending time outdoors—surfing, golfing, and staying active through fitness and music, especially playing guitar. His personal and professional life reflect a deep appreciation for nature and a commitment to preserving it. What draws Alex to BMRG is the opportunity to contribute directly to initiatives that help protect and restore critical ecosystems. Knowing that his work supports the health of the Great Barrier Reef and other natural assets gives him a strong sense of purpose and pride in the work he does. Welcome, Alex—we’re looking forward to the impact you’ll make. (fb)
