Nexus Multicultural Arts Centre Inc
Nexus Multicultural Arts Centre Inc, operating as Nexus Arts, is a not-for-profit contemporary arts organisation based in Adelaide, South Australia. It is recognised as a leader in culturally diverse and intercultural artistic practice, focusing on fostering excellence in contemporary art created by artists from multicultural and First Nations backgrounds.
History
Nexus Arts originated from an artist collective known as the Multicultural Arts Workers Committee, established to nurture public appreciation of culturally diverse arts and support new artist migrants resettling in Adelaide. In 1984 the collective transitioned into the Nexus Multicultural Arts Centre to provide dedicated spaces for showcasing multicultural artists' work and to promote connections across diverse communities in South Australia. In 2015, the organisation adopted the trading name Nexus Arts to reflect its expanded intercultural contemporary arts focus.
Activities and Programs
Nexus Arts offers a multidisciplinary platform encompassing visual arts, contemporary music, dance, and performance. It runs exhibitions, multicultural music evenings such as the Nexus Cabaret, workshops, residencies in visual arts, performance, and literature, and public forums addressing interfaith and multicultural arts themes. The organisation also facilitates skills development through workshops in art, music, and video, and hosts events including festivals and gigs.
Venue and Facilities
Located within the Lion Arts Centre in Adelaide’s West End, Nexus Arts provides a venue available for hire with a capacity ranging from 30 to 200 people. Facilities include a performance space, the Nexus Gallery for exhibitions, meeting rooms, accessible amenities, and optional services such as in-house photography, interior venue decor, and musical arrangements for functions.
Community Role and Impact
As South Australia's only contemporary arts organisation explicitly focused on culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) and First Nations artistic practice, Nexus Arts supports emerging and established artists from diverse cultural backgrounds. It plays a pivotal role in bridging communities and cultures through the arts, providing vital exposure for underrepresented artists to broader Australian audiences.
Adaptations during the COVID-19 pandemic included transitioning exhibitions online, exemplified by the 2020 virtual exhibition "I Am Because You Are: Illustrations Of Existence," which featured artists Wamala Kyeyune Joseph and Tailor Winston.

🎷 A Night to Remember! 🎶 On April 30, we celebrated UNESCO International Jazz Day at the Dunstan Playhouse, marking the 10th anniversary of Adelaide’s designation as a UNESCO City of Music . The evening featured the evocative sounds of the Zela Margossian Quintet, blending Armenian traditional music with contemporary jazz . Thank you to all who joined us in celebrating the rich tapestry of jazz and Adelaide’s vibrant music scene. Watch for moments captured from this unforgettable night. 📸 : Ben Clark [ID : Here is a reel of images captured during the Zela Margossian Quintet performance during the UNESCO International Jazz Day performance at Dunstan Playhouse.
