Jikishoan Zen Buddhist Community Incorporated is a Melbourne-based nonprofit organisation dedicated to Soto Zen Buddhist practice and education. Established in 1999 under the leadership of Zen Master Ekai Korematsu Osho, the community focuses on traditional teachings rooted in the 13th-century principles of Japanese Zen Master Eihei Dogen Zenji.
History and Leadership
The organisation was founded by Ekai Korematsu Osho, an ordained Soto Zen monk with over four decades of teaching experience across Japan, the United States, India, Australia, and New Zealand. As Abbot, he directs Jikishoan’s Zen and Integrated Buddhist Studies program, emphasizing Bendoho—the original monastic practice framework outlined by Dogen Zenji.
Activities and Vision
Jikishoan’s vision centers on providing transformative Buddhist learning and cultivation through meditation, rituals, and integrated studies. Activities include regular zazen (seated meditation), retreats, and workshops designed to bridge Zen practice with daily life. The community fosters accessibility to Buddhist teachings, aiming to nurture mindfulness and ethical living among participants.
Membership Structure
Membership categories include Practice Member (initial or full), Associate Member, and Honorary Member, the latter appointed by the Abbot and committee. Ordained Member status is reserved for those who have taken the sixteen Bodhisattva Precepts and received monastic training. While membership supports the organisation’s operations, most activities remain open to the public.
As a registered nonprofit, Jikishoan Zen Buddhist Community Incorporated operates with the ABN 15890129251 and adheres to its mission of promoting Zen Buddhist principles without commercial intent.
