The Duke of Edinburgh's Award in Australia Northern Territory Division Incorporated
The Duke of Edinburgh's Award in Australia Northern Territory Division Incorporated is a registered nonprofit youth organisation operating within the Northern Territory of Australia. It functions as a regional division of the global Duke of Edinburgh's International Award program, providing young people with opportunities to engage in personal development and community service activities.
Overview
The organisation is part of The Duke of Edinburgh's International Award, a widely recognised youth development program founded in the United Kingdom in 1956 by Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. The Award encourages adolescents and young adults to complete a series of structured challenges designed to build skills, foster physical well-being, enhance community engagement, and develop leadership through adventurous expeditions[5].
Operating within the Northern Territory under the Australian framework, the Northern Territory Division establishes and supports Award Centres across schools, community groups, and juvenile justice organisations. It delivers the Award in a fully inclusive manner, free from social, political, or religious affiliations[1][4].
Objectives and Program Structure
The primary aim is to empower young people in the Northern Territory to discover their purpose, passion, and place in the world by participating in a program that leads to internationally recognised certificates at the Bronze, Silver, and Gold levels. Participants are required to:
- Learn and develop a new skill
- Improve physical fitness
- Engage in voluntary community service
- Participate in a team adventure expedition in an unfamiliar environment
This comprehensive approach supports the holistic development of young people, helping them improve as individuals and members of society[1][3].
Governance and Registration
The Duke of Edinburgh's Award in Australia Northern Territory Division Incorporated is registered as a charity under the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC) with the Australian Business Number (ABN) 16453569284RR0001. It is governed by a committee responsible for overseeing the delivery and integrity of the Award program within the Northern Territory[1].
Community Impact
Since its establishment in 1977, the Northern Territory Division has grown to be an important youth organisation locally, often referred to colloquially as "Dukes Mob" or "The Award in NT". It plays a vital role in supporting young people to gain essential life skills, improve employability, and access further educational opportunities through non-formal learning accredited by the Duke of Edinburgh's Award framework[4][3].
The program’s inclusive nature promotes social connectedness and community participation, which are critical to the personal development and well-being of Northern Territory youth.

With great sadness, we share the news that Sir Eric Neal AC CVO KStJ passed away on Tuesday morning. Sir Eric made an extraordinary contribution to The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award in Australia and internationally. He served in senior leadership roles, including as an International Trustee alongside HRH Prince Philip as Chair, National Chair in Australia, World Fellow, regular donor, and most recently, as a Life Patron of the Duke of Ed in Australia, appointed in June this year. CEO, Peter Kaye AM ESM, who had worked with Sir Eric since the early 1980s, said “Sir Eric was always thinking of the greater good, unless that greater good was playing against Port Adelaide!” Sir Eric is survived by his two sons, Peter and James, five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Tom Mould AO, National Chair of the Duke of Ed in Australia, described Sir Eric as “a great Australian that provided inspired leadership and who when undertaking his many corporate, public and community roles, always sought to mentor and provided good counsel.” 📸: This recent photo (source: SA Government House/Website) was taken at a reception on his appointment as Life Patron.
