The Blue Mountains Rhododendron Society of New South Wales Inc
Overview
The Blue Mountains Rhododendron Society of New South Wales Inc is a nonprofit organisation dedicated to managing and maintaining the Campbell Rhododendron Gardens, a 18.3 hectare area of Crown Land in Blackheath, New South Wales. The Society operates entirely on a voluntary basis, relying on monetary donations to support its activities.
Purpose and Activities
The primary purpose of the Society is to establish, maintain, and enhance the Campbell Rhododendron Gardens. This involves creating a vibrant tourist destination for the Upper Blue Mountains region while also providing a recreational space for local residents. The gardens feature a unique blend of exotic species, including rhododendrons and azaleas, planted amidst native eucalyptus trees and shrubs. The Society also offers various facilities such as walking tracks, ponds, a lake, garden bridges, and visitor amenities including toilets and picnic areas.
Events and Community Engagement
In addition to garden maintenance, the Society organises events to engage with the local community and attract visitors. One of their notable events is the Annual Gnome Convention, which includes activities such as gnome painting, face painting, live music, and food stalls. This event fosters community spirit and contributes to the local cultural scene.
History
The Blue Mountains Rhododendron Society was established following an inaugural meeting on 2 April 1969, supported by the Blue Mountains Nurserymen's Association. Since its inception, the Society has been instrumental in developing the gardens into a popular tourist and community destination.
Governance and Operations
The Society is managed by a volunteer management committee and relies on the efforts of garden volunteers. This volunteer-driven approach ensures that all funds raised through donations and activities are directed towards maintaining and improving the gardens, benefiting both the local community and tourists visiting the area. The Society is registered with the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC), ensuring transparency and accountability in its operations.
Financial Structure
The organisation operates with the Australian Business Number (ABN) 16 760 724 460 RR 0001, and as a charity, it relies on donations to fund its activities. This financial structure supports the Society's mission of providing a free or low-cost recreational space while maintaining the gardens' beauty and ecological value.

To think that last year this area was a pieris jungle! The MonVols have worked so hard removing the pieris, uncovering stone walls, weeding, and planting. Today we planted 4 camellia sasanquas ‘Beatrice Emily’ and a small rhododendron ‘Eldorado’, and mulched the planted areas. The area is now called Griffiths Terrace Garden. We can’t wait to revisit it in a year- it’s going to look amazing. (fb)
Today we were visited by ecologist Roger Lembit who took us on a guided walk through the native areas of our gardens. Thanks Roger, it was so informative to learn the names of some the native species. We are hoping to formalise this with a pamphlet on the natives in the gardens in the future. (fb)
