Mark Hughes Foundation Limited

The Mark Hughes Foundation Limited is an Australian nonprofit organization dedicated to raising funds for brain cancer research, raising awareness about the disease, and supporting patients and their families. The foundation was established after Mark Hughes, a former Australian rugby league player, was diagnosed with brain cancer in 2013.

Mission

The mission of the Mark Hughes Foundation is to improve the lives of those affected by brain cancer through research, awareness, and support. It aims to collaborate with various stakeholders to drive impactful research programs that enhance survival rates and quality of life for brain cancer patients[1][3].

The Mark Hughes Foundation Centre for Brain Cancer Research

In partnership with the University of Newcastle, the foundation established the Mark Hughes Foundation Centre for Brain Cancer Research. This centre brings together scientists, clinicians, patients, and care professionals to advance brain cancer research. It leverages the university's cancer research ecosystem and cutting-edge technology to achieve significant outcomes for brain tumour patients[1][3].

Impact and Challenges

Brain cancer remains a significant health challenge with low federal funding. It is noted that brain cancer kills more Australians under 40 than any other cancer, with only 2 in 10 people diagnosed surviving at least five years[3]. Despite these challenges, the foundation is committed to making a difference through community engagement, fundraising, and research collaboration.

Community Engagement and Fundraising

The Mark Hughes Foundation encourages community involvement through various fundraising initiatives. It also partners with other organizations to enhance its reach and impact. For example, a recent partnership with Safewill allows supporters to create wills and include donations to the foundation, further supporting its mission to find a cure for brain cancer[5].
