Time to think about what schools do well... Child Side K-10 School is not a unicorn. We are real and we exist in the same policy and funding environments as any other state, religious or independent school. We exist in the same challenging climate that families and schools face across our nation. What sets us apart are the ways we've created spaces and structures that help our committed teachers to professionally enable our purpose and vision. We focus on building reciprocal, not just one-way, relationships; on activating purpose based learning, and on resourcefully designing structures to enable real flexibility. What we do works because of these structures, and because of our long term staff who invest their passion, compassion and effort to be connected and collegially support each other, and who willingly embody what the school values. Our long-term teachers demonstrate professional trust, and earn relational trust through time on the ground, to do what they came into the profession to do: make a real difference in the lives of children and to contribute to the long term goals of a healthy, robust and resilient society. Our teaching staff over the decades have created and upheld the conditions where real teaching and real learning are possible and purposeful, without the need for bells, whistles or any unicorn wishful thinking. Why do our long term teachers stay? Not out of obligation, but because they are really connected to their work and to the children, they have reciprocal respect for the lives and challenges of leadership, for families raising children and for their own personal fulfillment as professionals. They stay as they are supported in their professional growth and have agency to make things work for children in developmentally relatable ways. Why do our long term families stay? Not out of convenience, but because they are connected by design through relationships and our structures and they too embody what our school values. They value and support our school structures and processes knowing that together we share common goals to help shape the childhoods and futures of children. This is long, hard, shared effort and commitment which pays dividends into young adulthood. Our school's success is only through the commitment and dedication of our staff and families. We acknowledge that because we are working together as a community, we are better placed to navigate any of the ongoing challenges and obstacles that all schools and families encounter.
