On this day in 1871, a group of women in Wexford, Ireland, chose a life of faith, courage and service as the first Sisters of St John of God. This is the date we acknowledge as Foundation Day. This year also marks 130 years since the Sisters of St John of God arrived in Australia – women who cared with strength, compassion and love and whose spirit continues to inspire us today. From their early work during the gold rush to building hospitals, schools and services, their legacy grew with the creation of St John of God Health Care in 1989. Today we pause to honour our beginnings, reflect on the journey that has brought us here, and recognise the vital role our caregivers play in delivering compassionate, committed and connected care to the communities we serve.
