The latest revelations about organised crime infiltration in Victoria’s multibillion dollar Big Build show just how deep corruption runs in the construction sector. Despite government promises to clean up the industry, criminal figures are still profiting from taxpayer funded projects and the response so far has been inadequate. Watson, a leading barrister and board member of the Accountability Round Table, has been investigating corruption within the CFMEU for the union’s administrator. His findings expose a system of unchecked criminal influence, with gangland figures and bikie associates earning up to $10,000 a week for little or no actual work. What are the issues? 1. Corruption and criminal infiltration in the construction sector have been known for years but no serious action has been taken. 2. Investigations have uncovered payments of up to $600,000 funneled to gangland figures through companies working on government-funded projects. 3. Despite inquiries and political assurances, the same corrupt networks are still operating, continuing to exploit public money. Nobody’s stopping it. The Victorian government is as uninterested in dealing with corruption as the Morrison one was.
