Riding For The Disabled Association Of Victoria Inc
The Riding for the Disabled Association of Victoria Inc, also known as RDAV, is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing equine-assisted activities for people with disabilities across Victoria, Australia. With a history dating back to 1970, it celebrates over 50 years of service, advocating for and supporting individuals with a wide range of disabilities.
Overview
RDAV operates as a grass-roots, volunteer-based organization with a strong presence across Victoria. It currently has 36 centers, a community of 1,100 riders, supported by 1,000 volunteers and 200 qualified coaches[3]. The organization is renowned for its inclusive and diverse approach, welcoming participants aged 3 to 65 with various disabilities, including physical and intellectual disabilities, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, autism, and degenerative conditions[4].
Activities and Benefits
RDAV's programs focus on equine-assisted activities that provide therapeutic benefits, promote physical fitness, develop life skills, and offer opportunities for personal achievement. These activities include horse riding and carriage driving, which help participants improve their physical strength, develop mobility, enhance psychological well-being, and build confidence[1][5]. The carriage driving program is particularly beneficial for those who use wheelchairs, offering independence, balance, self-esteem, and motor skill development[1].
Community and Impact
RDAV is a testament to community spirit, fostering a sense of togetherness and mutual support among its participants. The organization's activities not only enhance the personal lives of riders but also contribute to a broader sense of community engagement and volunteerism. Volunteering opportunities are extensive, allowing individuals to assist during lessons, care for horses, and participate in fundraising efforts[1].
History and Inspiration
The inspiration behind the RDA movement is attributed to Elizabeth Hartel, a Danish dressage rider who, despite her polio-related disability, achieved remarkable success, including a silver medal at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics[1]. This legacy continues to inspire RDAV's commitment to empowering individuals with disabilities through equine activities.
Programs
RDAV offers various programs that cater to different needs and abilities, ensuring that all participants can engage in activities that are enjoyable, challenging, and rewarding. These programs are designed to promote ongoing skill development and provide opportunities for entering competitions, which further enhance riders' experiences and achievements[1].

Had the pleasure of catching up with the Wednesday team at RDA Moorrabbin this morning and met a gorgeous rider named Amelia, and her Mum, Emma who told me coming to RDA is the highlight of Amelia’s week. 🐴 Riding is doing wonders for her balance, and she's making great strides in learning her left and right and following instructions with the help of the incredibly supportive volunteers. And when asked, she loves everything 💜 The joy she gets from every moment is truly inspiring! #RDAMoorabbin #Inspiration #RDAV (fb)
On Sunday, we brought together trainee coaches and experienced coaches from various RDA Centres across the state for a Coaching Training Day at RDA Doveton / Myuna Farm A heartfelt thank you to Sally Francis OAM for leading an engaging, fun, and educational program that truly inspired everyone involved. A special shoutout to Adam, Ronan, Paige, Catherine, and Claire for their hard work in preparing the horses and the arena. As we continue to support and encourage more people to train as coaches, we look forward to enhancing the Riding for the Disabled experience for everyone involved. Here’s to ongoing growth and collaboration! 🐴💜 If you’re interested in training to be a coach and join this amazing community head to our website https://www.rdav.asn.au/get-involved/become-a-coach/ #RDAVictoria #RDADoveton #Coaching #RidingForTheDisabled #Community #TrainToInspire (fb)
