The Australian Association of Mathematics Teachers Ltd
The Australian Association of Mathematics Teachers Ltd (AAMT) is the leading nonprofit organisation representing mathematics education in Australian schools. It serves as the main representative body for mathematics teachers across the country.
Structure and Membership
AAMT operates as a federation of eight affiliated associations, each representing a state or territory in Australia. Membership is indirect, as individuals join their local state or territory association, thereby becoming members of AAMT. The organisation has approximately 4,000 individual and institutional members.
Governance
The AAMT is governed by a council composed of representatives from each affiliated association, along with an elected President, Treasurer, and either a President-elect or Immediate Past President. The day-to-day operations are managed by a staff based in Canberra.
Activities and Initiatives
The AAMT engages in several key activities:
- Professional Learning: Providing ongoing professional development for mathematics educators.
- Research and Projects: Collaborating on national projects to advance mathematics education.
- Conferences and Events: Organising conferences and workshops for mathematics educators.
- Resources: Offering resources through publications and educational tools like Maths300.
- Publications: Publishing peer-reviewed journals, including The Australian Mathematics Education Journal (AMEJ) and The Australian Primary Mathematics Classroom (APMC).
- Advocacy: Advocating for mathematics education in Australia and supporting state-based mathematics teacher associations.
Standards and Policy
AAMT publishes Standards for Excellence in Teaching Mathematics in Australian Schools to guide teaching improvements. It also advocates for comprehensive national investment in mathematics education, including the establishment of a Certified Teacher of Mathematics System to ensure rigorous standards and collaboration among stakeholders.
Mission
The AAMT's mission is to ensure every young person leaves school with excellent mathematics learning and teaching outcomes, contributing to the broader development of STEM capabilities across Australia.

Our final post on mathematical modelling looks at how technology can be used to support students’ modelling skills. Technology can play a powerful role in the modelling process, from simulating complex scenarios to visualising data and testing assumptions. Importantly, it allows students to iterate quickly, see the impact of changing variables and focus more on the modelling decisions rather than just the calculations. Spreadsheet software like Excel or Google Sheets is a simple yet effective tool for modelling. It allows students to build tables, apply formulas, and create graphs, which can help support real-world tasks such as budgeting, population modelling or optimisation problems. Meanwhile, dynamic mathematical tools such as Desmos or PhET simulations also allow students to explore relationships between variables visually and interactively. For example Desmos Classroom has a range of pre-built modelling exploration lessons, including one where students predict the number of Starbucks stores in the future: https://teacher.desmos.com/activitybuilder/custom/564d37a2895eb8280b0bfe0d?collections=651ca31cf69ee59aa9e3818a%2C5da649ac6254f22e20fd1107 Finally, the Digital Technologies Hub offers teaching ideas and classroom-ready resources. Using the filter to identify activities that link to mathematics, highlights some interesting mathematical modelling applications. For example 'Who wants to be a millionaire?' explores exponential growth through the famous chessboard /rice problem: https://www.digitaltechnologieshub.edu.au/teach-and-assess/classroom-resources/lesson-ideas/who-wants-to-be-a-millionaire/, while ‘Is it going to rain today?’ uses data from the BOM to help students better understand weather forecasting: https://www.digitaltechnologieshub.edu.au/teach-and-assess/classroom-resources/lesson-ideas/is-it-going-to-rain-today/# #mathseducation #mathsedau #mathematicalmodelling (fb)
