Look what bit Hugh on the toe this morning! After a brief period of raw panic (Hugh thought it was a funnel web), our resident spider afficionado pointed out that it was a tarantula. Obviously stroppier than the placid ones some people keep as pets! (fb)

Talia here. Today's project for Hugh and me: cleaning a termite nest out of our cabin. The amazing thing about these structures is that they sprang up on the inside and outside of the cabin walls in a month or less. That's the thing about living in the rainforest - it grudgingly allows you to live there, while constantly trying to re-establish dominance by overgrowing paths with vines, sending emissaries of various species of wildlife into your living areas and rotting anything you build almost as fast as you can build it.
