We interviewed Debbie, Lorenzo’s mum, about The Power of Community and the Impact of Finding15 Walks. When Lorenzo was diagnosed with Prader-Willi syndrome, their world changed overnight. But finding the PWS community made all the difference. “Receiving Lorenzo’s diagnosis was devastating. Our lives were instantly thrown into turmoil and our expectations of what we thought life would look like were forever changed.” In those early days, I constantly searched for what I could do to change the outcome. “I questioned what our future was going to look like.” I eventually found an amazing family on Facebook and Instagram who changed everything. “They connected us to the community — it was such a relief.” I still remember what one parent told me early on: “Trust your instincts. You will be your child’s voice.” That stuck with me and gave me the strength I didn’t know I had. “It feels like I have support no matter what.” That’s what community has given us. Emotionally, it’s knowing there’s always someone there. Practically, it’s the shared knowledge, advice, and ideas to help with Lorenzo’s care. “Having that support has made me feel like we will always have a village.” Events like the Finding15 Walks have helped us feel seen.
