International Specialised Skills Institute
The International Specialised Skills Institute (ISS Institute) is an Australian nonprofit organisation established in 1991 to address skills shortages by funding specialised training and applied research fellowships. Founded by Sir James Gobbo AC CVO and collaborators, it supports professionals in acquiring international expertise through its Overseas Applied Research Fellowship Program[2][5].
Mission and Activities
The Institute provides fellowships for Australians across industries such as artisan trades, education, environmental sustainability, heritage conservation, and energy innovation[3][5]. Fellows receive financial support to study best practices abroad and disseminate their findings through reports, workshops, and training programs[3][5]. Over 580 fellows from 75+ sectors have participated, impacting policy and industry standards[2][4].
Fellowship Programs
Key initiatives include the George Alexander Foundation Fellowship Program, which awards five annual grants of $15,000 each for early-career professionals in fields like lost trades manufacturing and alternative energy[3]. Fellowships emphasize knowledge transfer, requiring participants to publish detailed reports and recommend curriculum improvements[5].
Impact
A 2017–2018 evaluation by Swinburne University’s Centre for Social Impact highlighted the program’s role in driving sectoral innovation and economic development[4]. The Institute’s work has informed vocational training, conservation practices, and industry advancements, fostering a "better skilled Australia"[1][2].
Governance and Partnerships
Collaborating with governments, educational institutions, and industry bodies, the ISS Institute bridges gaps between international expertise and local workforce needs[5]. Its model prioritizes practical, scalable outcomes, ensuring fellows’ research influences policy and community practices[4][5].

We are delighted to announce that Mason Family Trust Fellow, Luke Price (@__luke__price__ ) has published his Fellowship report: The Dying Art of Silver Mirrors. Luke Price is the Director of a bespoke mirror manufacturing studio and one of the only Silverers in Australia. Through his Mason Family Trust Fellowship, Luke was able to refine and validate his silvering practice, gaining international recognition and renewed confidence in his craft. Engaging with European artisans expanded both his technical skill and his role as an educator and advocate for handmade mirrors. The Fellowship sparked collaborations, workshops, and a broader business vision, positioning him as a leader in reviving this endangered practice in Australia. His research into historic and contemporary silvering techniques has shaped new creative directions, while his outreach and teaching efforts aim to preserve and share this vanishing artform, laying the groundwork for silvering’s revival and long-term preservation in contemporary practice. 🔗 Tap the link in our bio to read Luke’s report 3.
