The orchestra was established by a group of local musicians, including violinists Shane Lestideau and David Irving, baroque flautist Greg Dikmans, and cellist Rosanne Hunt. The organization aims to nurture historical performance techniques in Melbourne while showcasing a repertoire that is true to the period. Under the patronage of renowned violinist Elizabeth Wallfisch, the orchestra continues to grow in stature.

Performance and Collaborations

Melbourne Baroque Orchestra regularly hosts its own annual concert series, featuring baroque and classical music performed on original instruments. This allows local musicians to showcase their skills while adhering to historical performance standards. The orchestra collaborates with various choirs and ensembles, including the Australian Chamber Choir, the Choir of Newman College, Polyphonic Voices, the Choir of Christ Church South Yarra, the Scots' Church Choir, and in recent years, has also worked with The Australian Boys Choir and The Choir of Trinity College (University of Melbourne).

Notable performances include a debut with The Australian Boys Choir at the Melbourne Recital Centre and a performance of J.S. Bach's St Matthew Passion in March 2024. In January 2024, the orchestra presented Handel's oratorio "Alexander's Feast" at the Organs of the Ballarat Goldfields Festival, receiving acclaim for its execution.

The Melbourne Baroque Orchestra receives support from several foundations, including the Robert Salzer Foundation and The Erica Foundation, as well as Creative Partnerships Australia and a growing base of private donors. The support ensures that the orchestra can plan performances with confidence while fairly compensating its musicians.
