Nature Foundation Limited
Overview
Nature Foundation Limited is a nonprofit organisation based in South Australia. It is the largest non-government nature conservation group in the region, primarily focused on protecting and conserving Australian landscapes, flora, and fauna[3][4].
History
Nature Foundation Limited was originally established in October 1981 as The National Parks Foundation by a group of conservationists including Warren Bonython, Barbara Hardy, Mark Bonnin, and David Cleland[3]. Over time, it evolved into Nature Foundation, formerly known as Nature Foundation SA Inc. (NFSA)[3].
Conservation Efforts
The organisation is responsible for owning and managing several nature reserves across South Australia. Two of its largest reserves are Witchelina and Hiltaba, which are converted pastoral stations[3][4]. Nature Foundation Limited's conservation activities support Australia's unique biodiversity and encompass nearly 40% of all private protected areas in South Australia, contributing significantly to national conservation efforts[2][4].
Projects and Initiatives
In addition to managing extensive reserves, the foundation has been involved in various projects designed to enhance biodiversity and protect natural habitats. One notable initiative was the "Water for Nature" project, which involved purchasing water rights to conserve small wetland areas along the River Murray[3]. The foundation also provides grants for research and community engagement projects, aiming to inspire community involvement in conservation[1][3].
Impact and Recognition
By its 30th anniversary, the organisation had assisted in acquiring over 25 properties for conservation purposes and supported more than 300 university researchers through grants[3]. It continues to play a significant role in South Australia's conservation landscape, supported by both state and federal governments[3]. The organisation has produced documentary projects like "Kids on Country," which have been recognised and acquired by Australian media platforms[1].

For organisations like ours, every day is a call to action for the survival of native and threatened species. Today, on the official #EndangeredSpeciesDay, we are reminded of the urgent need for education, celebration, and action for these species. As recorded in our 2024 Impact Report, Nature Foundation's nine nature reserves provide homes for 22 nationally listed threatened species and even more state-listed threatened species. Our aim is to conserve, restore, and protect landscapes and ecosystems to support our unique native flora and fauna. Your support and assistance are not just important, they are integral to our cause. We want to express our heartfelt thanks for the positive impact you make through your awareness, education, and action. Whether you are learning and sharing this important information, engaging with Nature Foundation through events and membership, or providing donations and financial support, your contribution is invaluable. It all makes a real difference for nature conservation and biodiversity across South Australia and beyond. Endangered species such as the Mount Lofty Ranges Southern Emu-wren (Stipiturus malachurus intermedius) are experiencing population growth thanks to the conservation efforts on our Watchalunga Nature Reserve on the Fleurieu Peninsula, including planting days supported by our incredible community of supporters. Together, as a community of nature lovers and conservationists, we can ensure these and other precious species survive for future generations. Your support, no matter how big or small, is a vital part of this collective effort. Thank you for being a part of this journey. 📸 by Deb Hopton (fb)
Nature Foundation is pleased to announce the appointment of Daniel Leinfelder as Deputy CEO. Daniel brings a wealth of experience to his new role, with over 25 years in the private sector. His expertise in impact assessment, traditional custodian and government engagement, and environmental management will be instrumental in leading Nature Foundation's innovative natural capital business development programs. His leadership will be key in achieving strong conservation, biodiversity, and business growth outcomes. Outgoing Deputy CEO Mark Ashley, who has held the position since 2022, has decided to return home to Darwin and transition to a part-time role. He will continue his work with Nature Foundation as Strategic Initiatives Advisor to enhance the organisation's capacity to deliver biodiversity outcomes. Mark's contributions, including developing the reserve management system, securing significant multi-year funding for the Kids on Country™ Junior Ranger Program, and improving the organisation's land acquisition systems to protect more land for positive biodiversity outcomes, have had an extraordinary impact on Nature Foundation. The leadership team is deeply grateful for his efforts and is pleased to have his ongoing support and contribution. Please join us in thanking Mark, and welcoming Daniel to Nature Foundation.
