Incite Arts Incorporated
Incite Arts Incorporated is an Australian nonprofit organisation dedicated to enriching the lives of all Central Australians through accessible, inclusive, and community-engaged arts practice. Based in Alice Springs (Mparntwe), it actively supports a wide range of artistic expressions while honoring the cultural heritage and sovereignty of the Arrernte people, the traditional custodians of the land.
History and Background
Founded in 1998 initially as the Alice Springs Youth Arts Group, Incite Arts was established to provide a platform for young people to express their stories in a contemporary cultural context. Over time, it evolved into an incorporated not-for-profit association with an expanded mission to include all individuals and groups who face barriers to arts engagement, especially focusing on people with disabilities and Indigenous communities. Since its inception, Incite Arts has become a key facilitator of community-engaged arts practice in Central Australia, building local capacity through partnerships with diverse communities and fostering resilience, inclusivity, creativity, and cohesion through the arts.
Mission and Values
Incite Arts is committed to providing arts programs that are accessible and inclusive, with a strong emphasis on disability-led initiatives and Indigenous cultural expressions. The organisation acknowledges the Arrernte people’s unceded sovereignty and pays respect to Elders past, present, and emerging, as well as all Indigenous peoples, cultures, and countries. Its programs create culturally safe environments that support both newcomers and experienced artists, promoting community storytelling, cultural traditions, and self-identity.
Programs and Activities
Incite Arts offers a variety of programs that incorporate multiple art forms such as dance, music, rap, aerosol art, singing, and performance-making. Notable programs include:
-
Xpress: A music mentorship program (Mparntwe Music Mentorship) providing ongoing mentorship, skill development, and industry exposure guided by experienced artists, fostering community strength and collaboration.
-
Strong Feelings: A disability-led multi-arts exhibition that showcases diverse artistic expressions.
-
Unbroken Land: A performative community arts event enabling collective storytelling through the arts.
-
stArts with D: A performing arts program supporting people with disabilities to develop skills and create collaborative self-devised performances.
-
Southern Ngaliya: An intergenerational program for Warlpiri women focused on ceremonial song and dance experiences.
These initiatives exemplify Incite Arts’ dedication to broadening the reach of arts engagement and creating transformative experiences for participants and audiences alike.
Impact and Recognition
Over more than two decades, Incite Arts has become a leading advocate and peak organisation in Alice Springs for the disability arts sector and community-based arts practice. Its innovative and responsive frameworks have enabled meaningful cultural participation among Indigenous peoples, youth, multicultural groups, and artists with disability. Thanks and Farewell to Mitch Mitchell Incite is sad to say farewell to Mitch Mitchell, our Admin and Comms Manager. It was very rewarding to have Mitch as part of the team (Nov 2023 – May 2025). Mitch started out as the Admin Manager and then took on the extra responsibility of the Comms role with good grace and purpose. Mitch’s 2024 work celebrating Incite’s 20th anniversary beautifully captured so many episodes of Incite’s journey so far. Mitch’s calm manner provided a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere at the Incite office. He had a soft spot for the stArts with D artists and was always ready to assist with their program when needed. They will miss him. The Incite Board, CEO, Artsworkers, Arts Mentors, Facilitators and participants all extend their sincere thanks to Mitch for his commitment and contribution to Incite Arts and all our programs, collaborating communities and the values and principles of our work. We wish Mitch all the best with his future endeavours. (fb)
Hello there. Incite is proud to share some good news as a member of ADNA- Arts and Disability Networkork Australia. ADNA is a national consortium of all state and territory peak bodies for arts and disability, coming together with a shared vision for a more inclusive and equitable creative sector. ADNA will drive national collaboration, amplify the work of disabled artists and arts workers, and embed access and disability leadership across the cultural landscape, collaborating with partners and stakeholders across all states and territories to elevate the voices, talents, and experiences of Deaf and disabled artists. In a major appointment, Sarah-Mace Dennis has been named as the inaugural National Director of ADNA. An interdisciplinary creative leader with two decades of international experience in the arts, education, screen, and community engagement sectors, Sarah brings a powerful combination of artistic innovation, academic insight, and lived experience of disability to the role. Sarah’s leadership is deeply informed by her personal journey following a traumatic brain injury, which led her to re-learn how to walk — and eventually dance — by listening to the sound of her feet. Her practice is grounded in inclusive methodologies and community storytelling, with a strong focus on who speaks, and for whom. From participatory digital works in urban spaces to mentoring disabled creatives on international campaigns, Sarah’s work challenges assumptions and expands perceptions of what’s possible in the creative sector. “We are thrilled to be developing a strong pathway for Arts and Disability Network Australia and to welcome Sarah-Mace Dennis as its first National Director,” said Rebecca Young. “This is a pivotal moment for Australia’s cultural landscape — to reimagine access, leadership and inclusion, and to ensure disabled artists are not just participants, but decision-makers, collaborators, and leaders. The Network has the potential to re-shape the way the arts sector includes, reflects and values disabled perspectives. Together, we will create space for new stories, new structures and new futures.” ADNA is supported by Creative Australia as part of the federal government’s commitment to strengthening the arts and disability sector nationally. The Network will work to amplify the impact of disabled artists, advocate for systemic change, and embed accessibility and disability leadership at the heart of Australia’s creative future.
