Gearin (PhD) brings a global lens to the modern entheogenic landscape, with research that traces the emotional and sensory contours of ayahuasca practice across continents—from Australia and Peru to China. 📚 His new book, Global Ayahuasca: Wondrous Visions and Modern Worlds (Stanford University Press, 2024), offers a rich ethnographic dive into how these sacred practices are shaped by the forces of modernity and globalisation. Now based at The University of Hong Kong, where he teaches narrative medicine and cultural psychiatry, Alex continues to bridge clinical, ethical, and cultural worlds with care and insight. 🔸 His talk at Garden States will explore how psychedelic medicine is practiced across a wide range of contexts—from clinical trials and psychotherapy to Indigenous Amazonian ceremony—showing that debates over “what works” are not just scientific, but also deeply political and cosmological, reflecting competing visions for the future of these powerful plants, fungi, and molecules.
