Filmonik Melbourne is a registered Australian not-for-profit organisation and cultural charity supporting independent filmmakers in Victoria. Established in 2013 as part of the global Kino Movement, it operates as an autonomous chapter within the international network of collaborative filmmaking communities.
Overview
Filmonik Melbourne provides a non-competitive platform for filmmakers at all experience levels to screen short films and collaborate on projects. Its open-screen events emphasize minimal-resource filmmaking, accessibility, and community-driven creativity. The organisation aligns with the Kino Movement’s philosophy of fostering spontaneity and collaboration, which originated in Montreal (1999) and now spans over 100 global chapters.
Activities
The group hosts monthly screenings at venues such as Loop Roof Cocktail Bar & Garden and Howler Bar & Theatre, where filmmakers present works directly to audiences without curation. Filmonik also organises "Kino Kabaret" events, intensive short-film production weekends where participants create and premiere films within 48 hours. Notable outputs include over 20 films during a 2017 kabaret and 36 films in 2021.
Structure
As a registered charity (ABN 25747756238RR0001), Filmonik Melbourne operates under a collaborative, volunteer-driven model. It functions without formal hierarchies, relying on community participation for event coordination and film production. The organisation is governed by its charitable mission to support Victorian filmmakers through inclusive practices and skill-sharing initiatives.
Affiliation
Filmonik Melbourne maintains ties to the global Kino Movement while operating independently under its not-for-profit structure. This connection enables knowledge exchange with international chapters while retaining a focus on Melbourne’s local filmmaking community.

This is the recap video of our 2025 Filmonik Melbourne Kino-Kabaret, a crazy extended weekend of collaborative filmmaking with over 70 participants. 24 short films were shot at and around Balam Balam Place in Brunswick (balambalamplace.com.au), a new purpose‑built creative and community precinct, from March 28 to March 31 and immediately premiered to the public at Howler Melbourne on April 1st. It was fun, epic, chaotic, challenging and spontaneous. It's not a competition, it's a celebration of film of all scope with no teams set in advance and no creative restrictions on the films. We'll be back at it again soon with another Kino-Kabaret July 10-13 2025: The Filmonik & MDFF Documentary Kino-Kabaret.
