Protecting Australia's natural environment from invasive species

Invasive Species Council. Authorised by Andrew Cox, S305-60 Leicester St, Carlton, Victoria. We are the only national NGO focused on one of the greatest threats to nature in Australia. Invasive species are the greatest threat to Australia's biodiversity. Our work seeks to protect the natural environment from harmful pests, weeds and diseases, primarily through prevention and early action. We facilitate and participate in riskbased biosecurity, eradication, containment and control measures along with research and governance reform to support this. Invasive Species Council Inc.

The Invasive Species Council Inc. is an Australian environmental non-governmental organisation dedicated to protecting Australia's natural environment from invasive species. It was founded in 2002 by a group of environmental advocates, including Tim Low, Barry Traill, Kate Blood, and several others.

History

The council was incorporated in July 2002 in response to growing concerns regarding the impact of invasive species on Australian biodiversity. Founding members recognized the need for a specialist policy and advocacy focus on addressing this issue.

Activities

Submissions

The Invasive Species Council (ISC) actively engages in making submissions to governmental inquiries, often collaborating with other organisations. Examples include submissions related to barriers to effective climate change adaptation, control of invasive animals on crown land, feral animal management, and marine pest biosecurity.

Lobbying

The ISC is known for highlighting potential conflicts of interest, such as the prioritization of agricultural interests over environmental concerns in biosecurity management. The organisation has raised awareness about various invasive species issues, including feral deer and fire ants, by petitioning federal and state ministers for action. For instance, in 2016, they drew attention to the risks posed by feral deer and petitioned for government action against fire ants. Additionally, they have worked to alert the public to threats such as the importation of dangerous weed seeds through Australian quarantine and the potential impact of invasive species like the smooth newt.

Raising Awareness

The ISC emphasizes that invasive species pose one of the greatest threats to Australian biodiversity, potentially even surpassing habitat loss. Through public awareness campaigns and media engagement, the council seeks to create political and public interest in addressing these threats.

Mission

The Invasive Species Council Inc. works tirelessly to protect Australia's natural environment from harmful pests, weeds, and diseases. By advocating for stronger laws, policies, and programs, the organisation aims to mitigate the impact of invasive species on native ecosystems and biodiversity.

Impact

The council's efforts are critical in focusing national attention on the urgent need for effective management and regulation of invasive species. Their work underscores the importance of addressing this issue through collaborative efforts between governments, private industries, and the community.
