2,700 year old Aboriginal rock art on Hook Island in the Whitsundays has been damaged by feral goats. Ngaro elder, Peter Pryor, who takes visitors on tours to the island, said the damage was the result of invasive animals rubbing along the cave walls. 'I'm just glad that there aren't elders still around to be able to see the damage that's happened there.' said Mr Pryor. Animal management programs are underway, however rangers from the Queensland Environment Department have said it may take up to a decade before all the goats can be removed. (fb)
Thank you to the almost 100 passionate people who travelled from around the state yesterday to be in parliament to listen to the debate on the petition calling for repeal of the Barilaro Bill protecting feral horses in Kosciuszko National Park. And a huge thank you to Dr Joe McGirr MP who presented the petition and spoke passionately about the need to get rid of Barilaro's law. Dr McGirr summed it up well when he said “Would we legislate to protect foxes, goats or pigs in our national parks? Would it make any sense to have a ‘Kosciuszko Wild Pig Heritage Act?'” Together we made it absolutely clear to the MPs that Australians want action to scrap this bad law which requires 3,000 feral horses to remain trashing and trampling one third of Kosci, polluting the headwaters of the Murray, Snowy and Murrumbidgee.
