Fremantle Biennale Inc. is an Australian nonprofit arts organisation registered under ABN 27981489421RR0001, known for curating a biennial festival of site-responsive contemporary art in Fremantle, Western Australia. Established as a medium-sized charity, it focuses on commissioning ephemeral and experimental works that engage with the cultural, social, and historical layers of the port city[2][3][4].
The organisation collaborates with Australian and international artists to produce site-specific installations and performances that respond to Fremantle’s coastal landscape, Indigenous heritage, and colonial history. Projects often occupy historically significant locations such as the Round House, Whaler’s Tunnel, and maritime infrastructure, fostering dialogue between art, place, and community[1][4][5].
Fremantle Biennale’s programming emphasizes ethical engagement with Whadjuk Nyoongar traditional owners, acknowledging their custodianship of the land. Its events include large-scale installations like Waterlicht by Studio Roosegaarde (2019) and participatory works such as Kastoms by Taloi Havini (2023), reflecting themes of environmental consciousness and cultural exchange[5][4].
The festival operates on a biennial cycle, with notable editions including HIGH TIDE (2017), Undercurrent (2019), and Crossings Bilya Bidi (2021), each addressing Fremantle’s identity as a port city through multidisciplinary practices. As a registered charity, it supports arts accessibility through predominantly free public programming[1][3][5].

We are pleased to announce Walyalup/Fremantle-based artist Shupiwe Chongwe as the inaugural Western Australian participant in a new exchange program between the sā Ladakh Biennale in the Indian Himalayas and the Fremantle Biennale on the Indian Ocean. This pioneering collaboration connects both continents through long-form residencies, focusing on regenerative practices and interventions in times of a changing climate. It aims to foster environmentally responsive creative practices and awareness raising. Shupiwe will undertake a residency with the Parkhang Collective and the Likir pottery community in Ladakh, known for using traditional materials like sun-dried mountain clay, cow dung for kiln firing, and sulphur from hot springs. Raised in Fremantle, Shupiwe Chongwe creates sculptural and functional ceramic works inspired by nature, family, and culture. She works primarily with stoneware, as well as terracotta and wild clay, using traditional firing techniques to create organic, one-of-a-kind forms. Shupiwe’s journey with ceramics started from a young age, inspired by her father; well known Australian-Zambian ceramicist Njalikwa Chongwe of Zinongo Gallery (Fremantle). Her family connection to the discipline dates back even further, to her great great grandmother who was a practicing potter in Zambia. We congratulate Shupiwe and look forward to the outcomes of this exciting cultural exchange. This project is made possible with the support of Creative Australia (fb)
