Battle of Pozières – 1916 Pozieres, a small village in the Somme Valley of France, was the site of intense and costly fighting involving the 1st, 2nd, and 4th Australian Divisions between 23 July and 7 August 1916. In less than seven weeks of fighting at Pozières and nearby Mouquet Farm, the Australian Imperial Force suffered over 23,000 casualties — including 6,800 who were killed or died of their wounds.
