Melanoma Patients Australia

Melanoma Patients Australia (MPA) is an independent, not-for-profit organisation dedicated to supporting and representing Australians affected by all types and stages of melanoma. It provides critical support services free of charge to melanoma patients, survivors, their families, and caregivers across the nation. Founded by two young melanoma patients, Daniel Belcher and the late Brent Grace, MPA was officially launched on 6 July 2006 by The Honourable Dame Quentin Bryce, then Governor of Queensland and later Governor-General of Australia[1][2].

Mission and Services

The organisation aims to reduce the impact of melanoma through comprehensive support and advocacy. MPA offers a range of services including:

  • A National Melanoma Telehealth Nurse Service that provides accessible nursing support nationwide.
  • Emotional support and information tailored to melanoma patients and their families.
  • Virtual and face-to-face support groups that facilitate peer-to-peer connections and community building.
  • Resources and guidance to help patients navigate healthcare decisions and manage melanoma treatment and survivorship[1][4].

Support and Community Engagement

MPA works closely with health professionals and cancer support organisations to ensure that melanoma patients receive holistic care. It coordinates monthly patient support group meetings around Australia, both in-person and online, enabling patients, carers, and families to share experiences and gain mutual support. These efforts are recognized and promoted by partner organisations including the Melanoma Institute Australia[5].

Governance and Status

As a registered charity, Melanoma Patients Australia operates transparently with an Australian Business Number (ABN) 30123091912RR0001. It maintains its nonprofit status while focusing on advocacy, education, and delivering patient-centered services[3].

Impact

By offering free services and fostering a network of peer support and expert care, Melanoma Patients Australia plays a crucial role in improving the quality of life and outcomes for melanoma patients throughout Australia. Its commitment to reducing the burden of melanoma helps thousands of individuals and families cope with this serious skin cancer on a daily basis[1][4].
