The Royal Zoological Society of New South Wales
The Royal Zoological Society of New South Wales (RZSNSW) is one of Australia's oldest zoological scientific societies, established in 1879 in Sydney, New South Wales. Initially formed as the New South Wales Zoological Society, it was granted a Royal Charter in September 1908, which led to a change of name to its current form on 10 February 1909.
History and Evolution
The Society's original purpose was notably focused on acclimatisation, aiming to introduce and establish non-native animal species from mainly the northern hemisphere into New South Wales to "improve" the local environment. This early colonial-era goal has since been abandoned. Today, the RZSNSW's principal focus is on promoting and advancing zoology as a scientific discipline, alongside protecting, preserving, and conserving the indigenous animals and their habitats throughout Australasia.
Membership and Fellows
The Society has historically recognized outstanding contributions to zoology through the appointment of Fellows. Individuals designated as Fellows of the Royal Zoological Society of New South Wales (FRZS) have demonstrated exceptional achievements in scientific research or significant support towards the Society's objectives. Since its inception, the Society has elected 85 fellows, with a membership of 1,127 as of 2015.
Publications and Awards
RZSNSW publishes the peer-reviewed scientific journal Australian Zoologist, which disseminates research on the fauna of Australia and the Australasian region. In 1979, the Society established the Whitley Awards, regarded as the premier recognition for excellence in zoological publishing pertaining to the Australasian fauna.
Role and Impact
Currently, the Royal Zoological Society of New South Wales operates as a nonprofit organization registered as a charity under the Australian Charities and Not-for-profit Commission. The Society raises funds to support zoological research through grants such as the Ethel Mary Read Research Grant Fund and the Paddy Pallin Research Grant Program. It plays a significant role in furthering zoological knowledge and conservation efforts across Australasia.
