Every year across Australia, the first week of August marks Homelessness Week. This is is an opportunity for us to come together, to learn from those with lived experience of homelessness, and to collectively address this devastating and pervasive issue. This years focus on prevention highlights the importance of providing accessible and appropriate support to those at risk, before they reach crisis point. With the number of individuals and families experiencing poverty increasing, greater investment in homelessness prevention and early intervention is vital. All Western Australians deserve a safe place to call home, and we all have a role to play in combatting homelessness in our community. This Homelessness Week, share a story, start a conversation, or participate in an event near you. (fb)
Recently, WACOSS CEO Louise Giolitto sat down with Michelle Jenkins of Youth Futures to discuss all things youth homelessness. “This is 25 years of inaction catching up with us,” Louise said. “The system is overwhelmed, and the crisis isn’t going away. If we want to prevent youth homelessness, we need a government that’s ready to invest in housing, early intervention and real support, not just emergency response.” Thank you to Youth Futures for the opportunity to share in this important dialogue. WACOSS is committed to advocating for the needs of young people at risk of or experiencing homelessness - not just this week, but all year round.
