Chimera Legacy Foundation – Empowering Transplant Patients

Chimera is passionate about bringing VR into patient care. Chimera Legacy Foundation have had a slow start to 2022 due to hospital healthcare budget restraints and Covid19 priorities. Chimera remained focus on its short term objectives and have been actively delivering on the actions to achieve them. 1. Building relationships in the community 2. Collecting valuable patient feedback 3. Educating healthcare professionals on the benefits of VR program 4. Lobbying hospital boards to support patient centric models of care Chimera's Townsville University Hospital VR program is successfully operating under the control of the social working unit, with plans to influence change management strategies to support the adoption of VR programs into routine systems of care. October Chimera's goal to host a VR program into the Oncology ward at Royal Brisbane and Women s Hospital was achieved after proving the VR Holiday from Hospital program beneficial and of value to inpatients. Chimera understands this is a large milestone in their journey into developing a recognised VR program 'Model' for patient centred care in hospitals. Since achieving this milestone Chimera have been granted 40k from local business to go toward capacity building for the safe implementation of VR therapy into the Oncology ward at RBWH. In addition, Flight Centre Foundation have agreed to partner with Chimera Legacy Foundation and contribute resources toward scaling our Holiday from Hospital VR program in to more hospitals and have since granted 30k opening the door for more funding in 2023. Overall Chimera is proud of it's achievements for the year 2022 and is excited to continue with the momentum gained this year and deliver on our objectives in 2023.

Chimera Legacy Foundation Ltd

Chimera Legacy Foundation Ltd is an Australian nonprofit organization focused on enhancing the inpatient healthcare experience for patients undergoing life-saving treatments. Established in 2019, the foundation centers its work on developing and supporting new care models that integrate innovative technologies to improve mental wellbeing during hospital stays.

Mission and Activities

The foundation’s mission is to empower transplant patients and other inpatients by addressing the psychological stress associated with hospitalization. It achieves this by collaborating directly with patients and healthcare professionals to deliver programs that leverage patient experiences to improve care. A key element of their approach includes the deployment of virtual reality (VR) therapies designed to support mental health and wellbeing in clinical settings.

History and Founding

Chimera Legacy Foundation was founded by Damien Thompson, a recipient of treatment including leukemia care, bone marrow and double lung transplants. Drawing from his personal journey with multiple serious health conditions and his positive experience with VR therapy during treatment, Thompson established the foundation to provide similar support to other patients facing complex medical challenges.

Leadership and Team

The foundation is led by a team with diverse expertise in healthcare, finance, and patient advocacy:

  • Damien Thompson, Founding Director, is a leukemia survivor and transplant recipient who drives the foundation’s patient-focused vision.
  • Blair McMillan, Director and CFO, brings professional experience from finance roles across pharmaceutical and software industries.
  • Bill Petch, CEO, advocates for healthcare reform and personalized medicine, with a background in establishing genomic trials and developing social impact health programs.

Partnerships and Impact

Chimera Legacy Foundation collaborates with healthcare providers and hospital staff to integrate VR therapies into patient care routines. These therapies aim to mitigate stress and improve the overall hospital experience, enhancing recovery conditions for patients receiving critical treatments.

The Chimera Legacy Foundation reflects a patient-centered approach to healthcare innovation, blending technology and personal experience to transform the supportive care environment for transplant and other seriously ill patients in Australia.
