A special commemorative service was held last night to unveil and dedicate the Jubilee Window newly installed in the War Memorial Chapel at Barker College. This stained-glass window was commissioned to mark 50 Years of Coeducation and has been generously gifted by the Old Barker Association. We were delighted to welcome back Mrs Sue Field, who unveiled the window alongside Mr Phillip Heath. The OBA President, Dush Sharma (Class of 2005) shared how the Jubilee Window will be ‘an everyday reminder of the strong values that bind us together – particularly the conscious inclusion of all young people at an educational institution like Barker.’ Performances from Barker’s Chamber Orchestra and Chamber Choir accompanied the service including a special performance from soloist Angelique Tot (Class of 2013). #WeAreBarker #50yearscoed (fb)
WELLBEING// Across the week, Secondary School students have engaged in several entertaining and informative presentations as part of our Wellbeing Week to conclude Term 2. Brad Marshall’s presentation on “Online Addiction” provided an insight for students intohow app developers use hidden tactics to keep us engaged longer. Students were encouraged to recognise signs of unhealthy screen use and how to introduce simple Unplugged Steps they can take in partnership with their parents to find a healthy balance. Brad followed this up at the Parent Institute forum in the evening with Professor Wayne Warburton from Macquarie University, as they discussed “Avoiding and breaking free from tech-enabled addiction and dependence”. Will Kirsop (Barker 2009) from Many Roads challenged our students to “Be Mindful, Be Kind, and Live Purposefully” by helping to equip students with tools for self-reflection, goal setting, and awareness of how emotions and actions interact. @MattCogin, the founder of Levelling Up, encouraged students in his presentation to “level up and build a phenomenal life” and importantly reminded us all that, someone else’s opinion of you, doesn’t have to become your reality. Matt discussed getting outside your comfort zone and activating courage. #WeAreBarker #wellbeing (fb)
