The Roman Catholic Church for the Diocese of Bathurst as Trustee for the Catholic Development Fund
The Roman Catholic Church for the Diocese of Bathurst as Trustee for the Catholic Development Fund (ABN 36939424395) is a nonprofit financial entity established to support charitable and educational projects within the Roman Catholic Diocese of Bathurst, Australia.
Overview
The fund operates as a financial instrument for Catholic community members and organizations to invest while directly contributing to diocesan initiatives. Investments are used to fund parish projects, including schools, churches, and healthcare facilities, with profits reinvested into these works after distributing returns to investors[1][2].
Financial Model
The Catholic Development Fund (CDF) offers fixed-term and savings accounts with competitive interest rates, such as 12-month terms at 4.25% and 6-month terms at 3.95%, as advertised publicly[1]. Unlike traditional banks, it does not charge account fees, positioning itself as a community-focused alternative[1].
Governance and Purpose
As a nonprofit, the fund channels returns beyond investor payouts into charitable activities aligned with the diocese’s mission. It is not regulated by the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA) or the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC), and investments lack protections under the Banking Act 1959[2]. Its structure emphasizes mission-driven financial support over commercial profit motives[2].
Historical Context
The Roman Catholic Diocese of Bathurst, established in 1865, oversees the fund as part of its broader ecclesiastical operations. The diocese spans Central West and Orana regions in New South Wales, with historical ties to Catholic education and community development[5].

Bishop McKenna's Connect@home for the 𝐅𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐄𝐱𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐇𝐨𝐥𝐲 𝐂𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐬 𝐍𝐮𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝟐𝟏:𝟒-𝟗 𝐏𝐬𝐚𝐥𝐦 𝟕𝟕:𝟏-𝟐. 𝟑𝟒-𝟑𝟖. 𝐑. 𝐯.𝟕 𝐏𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐩𝐩𝐢𝐚𝐧𝐬 𝟐:𝟔-𝟏𝟏 𝐉𝐨𝐡𝐧 𝟑:𝟏𝟑-𝟏𝟕 𝐁𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐯𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐇𝐢𝐦 Our Gospel reading today gives us part of the famous dialogue between Jesus and Nicodemus. It contains the most often quoted verse of the New Testament: 𝘍𝘰𝘳 𝘎𝘰𝘥 𝘴𝘰 𝘭𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘭𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘩𝘦 𝘨𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘰𝘯𝘭𝘺 𝘚𝘰𝘯, 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘸𝘩𝘰 𝘣𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘴 𝘪𝘯 𝘩𝘪𝘮 𝘮𝘢𝘺 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘣𝘦 𝘭𝘰𝘴𝘵 𝘣𝘶𝘵 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘦𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘯𝘢𝘭 𝘭𝘪𝘧𝘦. We wonder how the pharisee heard those words, at once so startling and so comforting, as so many have heard them since. How do I hear them today, speaking to me? At the beginning of John’s Gospel, the evangelist identifies Jesus as the Logos, the manifestation of the creative power of God. Jewish writers called it the 𝘔𝘦𝘮𝘳𝘢. Jesus prophesises his own lifting up on the cross and links it with the story of Moses and the bronze serpent showing the 𝘔𝘦𝘮𝘳𝘢 in the first reading. Looking up at the bronze serpent, or looking up at the Cross, it is God who saves sinners. 𝘞𝘩𝘦𝘯 𝘐 𝘴𝘶𝘳𝘷𝘦𝘺 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘸𝘰𝘯𝘥𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘴 𝘤𝘳𝘰𝘴𝘴, 𝘰𝘯 𝘸𝘩𝘪𝘤𝘩 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘗𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘨𝘭𝘰𝘳𝘺 𝘥𝘪𝘦𝘥, as the old hymn begins, what do I see and what do I believe? It is one thing to believe the historical truth of the Crucifixion; it is an act of faith to 𝘣𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘦𝘷𝘦 𝘪𝘯 what it means for humankind; and what it means for me. To pray the hymn from St Paul’s letter to the Philippians can catch up the spark of faith we may have and fan it into flame. 𝘊𝘩𝘳𝘪𝘴𝘵 𝘑𝘦𝘴𝘶𝘴 𝘦𝘮𝘱𝘵𝘪𝘦𝘥 𝘩𝘪𝘮𝘴𝘦𝘭𝘧, 𝘣𝘶𝘵 𝘎𝘰𝘥 𝘳𝘢𝘪𝘴𝘦𝘥 𝘩𝘪𝘮 𝘩𝘪𝘨𝘩.
